The Deliverance of Israel Begins

Exodus 5:1-23; 6:1-8; 7:1-25

INTRODUCTION:  When we are in need, we prefer to think of a deliverance that works like the cavalry coming at the last minute while giving complete and immediate relief.  God does not always work this way.  Even deliverance may involve struggles and battles.  This lesson teaches us much about these battles.

I.          MOSES AND AARON APPROACH PHARAOH (5:1-9)

            A.            Their Initial Demand (v.1)  -“let my people go”

            B.            Pharaoh’s Refusal (v.2)

                        1.            I know not the Lord

                        2.            I will not let Israel go

            C.            Their Detailed Demand (v.3)

                        1.            Three days’ journey

                        2.            To sacrifice to the Lord

            D.            Pharaoh’s Concern (v.4-5)  -their burdens

            E.            Pharaoh’s Order (v.6-9)

                        1.            Give them no straw (v.6-7)

                        2.            Do not diminish their quota (v.8-9)

II.            PHARAOH’S TASKMASTERS INCREASE THE BURDENS (5:10-19)

            A.            The People Scattered to Find Stubble (v.10-12)

            B.            The People Pushed to Produce (v.13-14)

                        1.            To keep their daily tasks (v.13)

                        2.            They were beaten for failing (v.14)

            C.            The People Complain of their Circumstances (v.15-16)

            D.            The Taskmasters Accuse Them of Idleness (v.17-19)

III.         THE PEOPLE COMPLAIN TO MOSES AND AARON (5:20-23)

            A.            They Accuse Moses and Aaron (v.20-21)

            B.            Moses Cries Unto the Lord (v.22-23)

IV.        THE LORD ASSURES MOSES OF VICTORY (6:1-8)

            A.            He Promises Deliverance (v.1)

            B.            He Declares His Name (v.2-3)

NOTE:  The patriarchs knew God (i.e., intimately experienced Him) as “God Almighty” (Gen.17:1; 35:11; 48:3).  They knew God as the God who has all-power.  Yet, although they used the name Jehovah (LORD), they did not know God intimately as Jehovah—the Self-Sufficient One (Ex.3:13-15; Jn.5:26).  He does not depend on time (Isa.57:15), place (1Kgs.20:23, 28-29) or on belief (2Tim.2:13) in order to exist or work.  He transcends all of these.  God is going to reveal, not only His power, but also His self-sufficiency to Moses and the people of Israel.  The plagues and parting of the Red Sea show Him to be all-powerful.  However, the giving of the law and God’s keeping of His covenant with Abraham show Him to be all-wise and totally beyond anything this world and mankind has to offer.  He is Jehovah—the Great I AM!

            C.            He Keeps His Covenant (v.4-5)

            D.            He Will Make Then a People (v.6-7)

            E.            He Will Give Them the Land (v.8)

V.         THE LORD SENDS MOSES BACK TO PHARAOH (7:1-7)

            A.            God Reveals His Plan to Moses (v.1-5)

                        1.            Moses as a god to Pharaoh (v.1-2)

                        2.            Pharaoh’s heart to be hardened (v.3-4)

                        3.            God’s power to be known (v.5)

            B.            Moses and Aaron Obey the Lord (v.6-7)

VI.        MOSES SHOWS PHARAOH THE SIGN OF THE ROD (7:8-13)

            A.            Aaron’s Rod Becomes a Serpent (v.8-10)

            B.            The Magicians Turn Their Rods to Serpents (v.11-12a)

            C.            Aaron’s Rod Swallows Their Rods (v.12b)

            D.            Pharaoh’s Heart is Hardened (v.13)

VII.       THE RIVER OF EGYPT IS TURNED TO BLOOD (7:14-25)

            A.            Moses Commanded to Meet Pharaoh at the River (v.14-18)

            B.            The Waters of Egypt Turned to Blood (v.19-21)

            C.            The Egyptians Respond to the Plague (v.22-25)

                        1.            The magicians duplicate the miracle (v.22a)

                        2.            Pharaoh’s heart is hardened (v.22b-23)

                        3.            The Egyptians dig for water (v.24-25)

Study Outline: Satan’s Strategy Against Those Who Would Leave the World (Exodus 5:1-23)

SETTING:  The Israelites were God’s people.  They were in bondage to Egypt (a type of the world) and sighed in their bondage (Ex.2:23).  God hears their cry (Ex.2:24-25), He sends Moses to deliver them (Ex.3:9-10) and the people believe that they are going to be delivered (Ex.4:29-31).  Pharaoh does not want to lose those people he has in bondage so he fights back.  This outline shows the strategy of Satan against those believers who get fed up with the world and determine to draw nigh to God.

1.       He Removes the Comforts to Which They are Accustomed (5:7; Jonah 4:6-8)

2.       He Continues the Demands on your Time and Effort (5:8; Eccl.1:1-3, 8)

3.       He Adds Burdens to your Already Heavy Load (5:9; Mt.11:28)

4.       He Removes or Neutralizes Those who could Help you Most (5:12; Job 19:13-19; Ps.73:25)

5.       He Brings Direct Attacks on you from Some Source (5:14; 1Pet.5:8)

6.       He Finds Someone to Falsely Accuse You (5:17; Ps.35:13-16)

7.         He Gets you Caught in Blame Games (5:20-21; Gen.3:12-13)
