The Fiery SerpentsNumbers 21:1-9
INTRODUCTION: This lesson deals with two great themes. It shows the danger of discouragement among God’s people and it gives a wonder picture of salvation. You may not be able to teach both topics in depth. Pray for the Lord’s will as to which approach you take in teaching this lesson.
I. BATTLE WITH THE CANAANITES (21:1-3)

II. THE SIN OF THE PEOPLE (21:4-5)
A. They Were Much Discouraged (v.4)
1. Discouragement: a loss of courage, hope, confidence moral energy
2. They were discouraged in the way (their circumstances)
a. Miriam had died (Num.20:1) b. The people had rebelled (Num.20:2-3) c. Moses and Aaron had sinned (Num.20:11-12) d. Edom had refused passage (Num.20:14, 17-18) e. Aaron had died (Num.20:24, 29) f. The people had fought Arad (Num.21:1-3)

V. GOD’S PLAN TO HEAL THE PEOPLE (21:8-9; Jn.3:14-18)
NOTE: According to John 3:14, the lifting up of the serpent in the wilderness is a direct picture of God’s offer of eternal salvation through the death of Christ on the cross. This section of the outline compares the healing of the Israelites in Numbers with the statement of the gift of salvation in John 3:16.

G. A Free Remedy
1. Numbers 21:9 – “when he beheld” 2. John 3:16 – “he gave” (Rom.6:23)
