David’s Last Words and Mighty Men

2Samuel 23:1-39

 

INTRODUCTION:  See also 1Chronicles 11:10-47.

 

 

I.                    DAVID’S LAST WORDS (23:1-7)

 

A.     The Man, David (23:1)

 

1.      The son of Jesse

2.      The man who was raised up on high (2Samuel 7:8-9)

3.      The anointed of the God of Jacob

4.      The sweet psalmist of Israel

 

B.     The Words of David (23:2)

 

1.      By the Spirit of the LORD

2.      With His word in his tongue

 

C.     The God of David (23:3-5)

 

1.      Ruling over the rulers of men (v.3)

a.       With justice

b.      In the fear of God

2.      Pictures of the righteous ruler (v.4)

a.       As the light of the morning

b.      As the grass of the earth

3.      Blessing those He loves (v.5)

a.       Despite the flaws of David’s house

b.      Made with David an everlasting covenant

(1)   Ordered in all things

(2)   Sure

c.       Fulfilling all that David could want

(1)   His salvation

(2)   His desire

 

D.     The Enemies of David (23:6-7)

 

1.      As thorns thrust away (v.6)

2.      To be burned with fire (v.7)

 

II.                 DAVID’S MIGHTY MEN (23:8-39)

 

A.     The First Three (23:8-12)

 

1.      Adino the Ezrite (v.8)

a.       Chief among the captains

b.      Slew 800 with his spear at one time

2.      Eleazar the son of Dodo (v.9-10)

a.       Defied the Philistines when the men of Israel were gone away (v.9)

b.      Smote the Philistines until his hand clave unto his sword (v.10)

c.       Application: Our sword in the word of God (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12).  We need to grasp it until it becomes an extension of our selves (Colossians 3:16).

3.      Shammah the son of Agee (v.11-12)

a.       In a piece of ground full of lentils (v.11)

b.      He stood in the midst of the ground and defended it (v.12)

c.       God gave a great victory over the Philistines (v.12)

 

B.     The Bethlehem Exploit (23:13-17)

 

1.      Separated from Bethlehem by the army of the Philistines (v.13-14)

2.      Wished aloud for water from Bethlehem’s well (v.15)

3.      Brought water from the well by three mighty men (v.16)

4.      Refused to drink of the water under such circumstances (v.17)

 

C.     The Second Three (23:18-23) –only two of them are named

 

1.      Abishai the brother of Joab (v.18-19)

a.       Slew 300 enemy with his spear (v.18)

b.      The first among the second three (v.19)

2.      Benaiah the son of Jehoiada (v.20-23)

a.       Slew two lionlike men of Moab (v.20)

b.      Slew a lion in a pit in the time of snow (v.20)

c.       Slew an Egyptian with his own spear (v.21)

d.      Had a name and set over David’s guard (v.22-23)

 

D.     The Remainder of the Thirty (23:24-39) –a few mentioned here

 

1.      Asahel the brother of Joab (v.24)

2.      Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite (v.34)

3.      Naharai the armorbearer to Joab (v.37) –but Joab is never mentioned

4.      Uriah the Hittite (v.39)
