We Should Live Soberly (Titus 2:12)

Introductory Thoughts

Sobriety is much more than simply a way of thinking; it is the scriptural approach to Christian living. The grace of God, through the Holy Ghost (John 16:13), teaches the believer the proper approach to living the Christian life. Grace teaches separation by stating that believers should deny “ungodliness and worldly lusts.” Yet, grace does not stop there. It also teaches a threefold approach to living life: “soberly, righteously, and godly.” Not only must a believer have a sober mind, he must also approach every aspect of his life with sobriety. He should pray with sobriety. He should read the scriptures with sobriety. He should witness with sobriety. Any contrary thing will cause the believer to suffer great loss.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): Proverbs 23:7 says that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. The best way to live soberly is to keep your thoughts on Gods word and upon other associated things (Psalm 1:1-3; Psalm 19:14; Psalm 119:59; Philippians 4:8).
  • (For everyone): Why is it important to approach every aspect of life with sobriety? How can sobriety help your Bible study and prayer life? How can sobriety assist you in witnessing to others?
  • How does sobriety, or the lack of sobriety, affect a believers ability to live righteously and godly in this present world? Can a person live righteously and godly without living soberly?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Thank the Lord for teaching you to live soberly.
  • Ask God to remind you that life is to be approached soberly.
