PASSAGE: Romans 1:1-12

COMMENT: Paul begins his letter to the Romans with a declaration about the gospel. Then, after sending his greetings to the Romans, he tells them of his desire to visit them and be a blessing to them.

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

1. The gospel of God had been promised before by His __________ in the holy ____________.

2. Paul talks about having received grace and ________________ for obedience to the ___________ among all nations.

3. Paul refers to the Roman believers as ___________ of God and called to be ___________.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

1. Romans 1:4 says that Jesus Christ was declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead. When did Jesus become the Son of God? Was He the Son of God before He arose from the dead? What does it mean that the resurrection declared Him to be the Son of God?

2. Paul assures the Romans that “without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers” (v.9). What does the phrase “without ceasing” mean in context? How would you apply this to the command in 1Thessalonians 5:17 to pray without ceasing?

3. What does Paul mean by the “mutual faith” (v.12)? How is this related to other phrases like “the common faith “ (Titus 1:4), “the common salvation” (Jude 1:3), and “like precious faith” (2Peter 1:1)?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

1. Paul introduces himself as a servant, an apostle, and as “separated unto the gospel of God” (v.1). Why do you think he calls himself a servant of Jesus Christ before he mentions that he is an apostle? What does he mean by being separated unto the gospel of Christ? How can you apply these two answers to your own life?

2. Paul tells the Romans that “your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world” (v.8). What do you think this means? Tell possible ways that this may have happened. Give examples of when you have spoken of the faith of others. If you have not done so, do so now. Whose faith could you speak of in a good way? What can you say about their faith? Why is their faith worth speaking of? What can you learn from this?

TEXT: Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:

6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
