PASSAGE: Deuteronomy 31:1-15

COMMENT: The Lord has told Moses that he will not be able to go into the Promised Land. However, we see Moses preparing the people and preparing Joshua as their leader to enter the land and conquer it. We, too, must learn to think beyond ourselves. We need to leave others with their eyes on the Lord and not afraid to follow Him.

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

1. At the time of this chapter, Moses is one hundred and ___________ years old.

2. Of the nations that possess the Promised Land, Moses promises that “the LORD shall give them up before your _________,”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

1. In verses 7 and 8, Moses speaks to Joshua “in the sight of all Israel.” What is Moses doing with Joshua? Why does he say these words in the sight of all Israel?

2. Moses wrote the law and delivered it to the priests and to the elders of Israel (v.9). What was the purpose of this? What benefits should have come from this?

3. Every seventh year, the law was to be read to all Israel at the feast of tabernacles (v.10-12). Even the children were to be included in the hearing of the law. Verse 13 states, “And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God…” What can children learn from the hearing of the Bible? In what ways can we teach the Bible to our children?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

1. Verse 6 states, “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” These words were said to Israel before they went to conquer the land of Canaan. How can these words help us? What lessons do they have for our daily life?

2. Moses commanded the priests and elders to “read this law before all Israel in their hearing” (v.11). Much is said in the Bible about the reading of the word of God. Paul tells Timothy, “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine” (1Timothy 4:13). Why is it so important that we read the Bible? What is its value? What do we lose when we do not read God’s word?
