PASSAGE: Romans 6:1-12

COMMENT: Chapters one through three of Romans dealt with sin while chapters four and five dealt with salvation. Now that the sinner is saved, how is he to live for God? Chapters six through eight of Romans deal with the topic of sanctification. The believing student of this passage will find that amazing provision has been made for a life of holiness and service to God. He will also find that this provision is to be found in his union with Christ.

WHAT DOES IT SAY?

1.                   As many as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His _________.

2.                   As Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in ___________ of life.

3.                   We have been __________ together in the likeness of His ________.

4.                   He that is _________ is freed from sin

5.                   We are to __________ ourselves to be dead indeed unto sin.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

1.                   Romans 6:1 refers to the potential problem of counting on the grace of God in such a way as to continue in a sinful life. Carefully read Romans 5:20-21 and explain how this could be a problem. Then, read beyond Romans 6:1 and tell in general terms what Paul’s solution was.

2.                   Paul asked, “How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” (Romans 6:2). Tell in your own words what it means to be dead to sin for the believer. Tell also what it does not mean.

3.                   How is our life as a Christian connected to the resurrection of Christ? Consider Romans 6:4, 8, and 11. What do these verses say about our relationship to Christ in His resurrection?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?

1.                   A key word in this passage is the word “know.” Verses 3, 6, and 9 all begin with some form of this word. Carefully study these three verses and tell three things that we are to know if we are to live a sanctified life.

2.                   Romans 6:11-12 gives us two commands dealing with our relationship to sin. We are to reckon ourselves to be dead indeed unto sin and we are not to let sin reign in our mortal body. Explain how we can obey each of these commands and use a particular sin as an example and show how this instruction can give the victory over sin.

SUGGESTED MEMORY VERSES: Romans 6:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12
