Getting God's Attention with Your Sins

Revelation 18:5-8

INTRODUCTION: God knows all things. But some things get His attention faster than others. He knows all our sins. But some sins get noticed faster and sometimes sin piles up so high that He responds.

I. HER SINS ARE REVIEWED (v.5-6)

A. The reach of her sins – unto heaven (v.5)

1. The wickedness of Noah’s day (Genesis 6:11-13)

2. The cry of Sodom (Genesis 18:20-21; 19:13; Isaiah 3:9)

3. How far do your sins reach?

B. The remembrance of her sins – by God (v.5; Jeremiah 14:10)

q Jeremiah 14:10 Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

C. The reward of her sins – double (v.6; Jeremiah 16:18)

q Jeremiah 16:18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things.

II. HER PRIDE IS REBUKED (v.7)

A. She glorified herself (Daniel 5:22-23)

q Daniel 5:22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; 23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

B. She lived deliciously (Amos 6:1-7)

C. She spoke with herself: “saith in her heart” (Luke 12:16-20)

III. HER JUDGMENT IS REAPED (v.8)

A. Quick judgment – “in one day”

q The lesson of the almond tree – the first tree to bloom, it speaks of the swift approach of the judgment of God – Jeremiah 1:11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. 12 Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

B. Multiplied judgment

1. Death

2. Mourning

3. Famine

q Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. 19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

C. Complete judgment – “utterly burned” (see 2Thessalonians 1:7-9)

D. Powerful judgment – “strong is the Lord God who judgeth her” (Psalm 62:11; Joel 2:11; Isaiah 26:4)

q Joel 2:11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

q Psalm 62:11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

q Isaiah 26:4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

CONCLUSION: How much better to get God’s attention by our obedience than by our disobedience. Saul was noticed because of his disobedience (1Samuel 15:10-11, 22-23). Isaiah speaks of the man God would like to notice (Isaiah 66:1-2).
