Introduction: Tophet was located in the Valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem. In scripture, It is a place of burning (Jeremiah 7:31), a place of abominations (Jeremiah 19:2-5) and a place of judgment (Jeremiah 19:6-7). In our text (Isaiah 30:33), it is a title for hell.

I. THE PURPOSE OF HELL - "ordained of old"

     A. To Take Vengeance on Those Who Know Not God (2Thessalonians 1:7-9; 2:12; Revelation 21:8)

     B. To Satisfy the Wrath of God Against Sin (John 3:16-19, 36; Romans 1:18; 5:9; Ephesians 5:6)

II. THE PREPARATION OF HELL - "for the king it is prepared"

     A. For the King of Pride (Job 41:34)

     B. For the Devil and his Angels (Matthew 25:41)

III. THE PROPORTION OF HELL - "he hath made it deep and large"

     A. Expanded to Include the Wicked (Psalm 9:17)

     B. Enlarged Without Bound (Isaiah 5:14; Proverbs 27:20)

IV. THE PAIN OF HELL - "fire and much wood"

     A. Eternal Torment (Luke 16:22-24, 28)

     B. Eternal Darkness (Jude 13)

     C. Eternal Separation (2Thessalonians 1:8-9)

V. THE POWER OF HELL - "the breath of the LORD...doth kindle it"

     A. The Righteous Wrath of God (Zephaniah 1:14-18)

     B. The Inescapable Wrath of God (Revelation 20:10-15)
