How Long Will Ye Love Vanity? (Psalm 4:2)

Introductory Thoughts

The Bible says that vanity is meaningless and empty, yet men love vanity. It fills their imaginations (Psalm 2:1), their thoughts (Psalm 94:11), and their speech (Psalm 144:8, 11). Vanity consumes man so much that he will weary himself for it (Habakkuk 2:13). In comparison to the vanities of this life, most people spend a brief moment in the eternal word of God. Far too many Christians fear to speak God’s righteousness but demonstrate boldness as they speak on behalf of their favorite vanities. As men tend to forget to spend time with the Lord, they spend entire days pondering the vanity to be enjoyed later in the day. Is it any wonder why people need so many “pick-me-up” drinks and drugs as they weary themselves in pursuit of vanity.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): Children spend much time and strength focused upon the worlds heroes that are not real. Do you realize one day we will meet the real heroes of the Bible such as David, Daniel, Moses, Joseph, Noah, etc.? Why not read their stories and pretend to be one of them when at play?
  • (For everyone): What topics consume your thoughts and your speech? Are these topics vain or do they bring glory to God? How can you turn your vain thoughts into thoughts that are profitable?
  • Do you weary yourself for vanity? Do you weary yourself to the point where you cannot find the time and strength to serve the Lord? How does the Lord feel about this?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Ask God to help you give yourself to things that are profitable.
  • Ask the Lord to convict you about loving vanity.
