Text: Psalm 139:7-12

INTRODUCTION: Psalm 139 is built on the theme of God’s knowledge of His servants.

q The opening and closing of the psalm

o Opening statement – verse 1

o Closing prayer – verses 23-24

q Four sections of the psalm the fullness of the knowledge of God. (Can be compared to the four dimensions of the love of God in Ephesians 3:18)

o The breadth of His knowledge (v.1-6) – “too wonderful for me” (v.6)

o The length of His knowledge (v.7-12) – “Whither shall I go from” (v.7)

o The depth of His knowledge (v.13-16) – “in the lowest parts of the earth” (v.15)

o The height of His knowledge (v.17-24) – “how great is the sum of them!” (v.17)

q Our section (v.7-12) speaks of the presence of the knowledge of God wherever we go. No matter where we find ourselves, we will find that God is “even there” (v.10).

I. THE PROBLEM OF GOD’S PRESENCE

A. Not That God Leaves Us - Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

B. But That We Leave Him (Psalm 139:7)

1. We roam – “Whither shall I go from thy spirit?

2. We run – “whither shall I flee from thy presence?”

II. THE POSSIBILITIES OF GOD’S PRESENCE

A. Dominion

1. If I ascend up into heaven (v.8)

2. A picture of times of blessing and elevation in this world

3. We tend to think we do not need God and these times become a great temptation (1Timothy 3:6)

4. Paul had learned to abound and to be full (Philippians 4:11-13)

5. The example of David

a. His elevation (2Samuel 7:8-11)

b. His temptation (2Samuel 11:1-2)

c. God’s presence (2Samuel 12:7, 13)

B. Depth

1. If I make my bed in hell (v.8)

2. A picture of times of despair and trouble

3. The example of Joseph

a. His troubles (Psalm 105:17-18)

b. God’s presence (Psalm 105:19)

c. His elevation (Psalm 105:20-21)

C. Distance

1. If I take the wings of the morning (v.9)

2. A picture of times when we get away from God

3. The example of Jonah

a. His flight from God (Jonah 1:1-3)

b. His descent (Jonah 1:4-5, 15-17)

c. God’s presence (Jonah 2:1, 10)

D. Darkness

1. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me

2. A picture of times when men feel hidden from God

3. The example of Mephibosheth

a. His condition (2Samuel 9:3, 8)

b. God’s presence (2Samuel 9:1, 7)

c. His provision (2Samuel 9:9-10)

III. THE PROVISION OF GOD’S PRESENCE

A. To Lead Us – “Even there shall thy hand lead me” (v.10)

B. To Lift Us – “thy right hand shall hold me” (v.10)

C. To Lighten Us – “even the light shall be light about me” (v.11)

CONCLUSION: Where are you today? Wherever it is, God is even there. Do you know Him as your Saviour? Do you trust Him as your friend? Do you submit to Him as your Lord and Master? Would you pray the prayer of verses 23-24?
