Occasional Drinking

Q: Is it a sin to have an occasional (one) glass of wine with dinner?

A: Thank you for your question. It is one that is on the heart of many people.
The best short answer that I can give you is this:

Many people believe that it is not a sin to drink an alcoholic beverage and
will site some old testament passages and even twist some passages and say
that Jesus Christ himself drank alcoholic wine. In short, no, Christ did not
drink alcoholic wine. When Christ came, many Old Testament practices
changed.

Some people go to the passage in I Timothy 5:23 that says to take a little
wine for you ailments, and say, "See, the bible says it is O.K. to drink."
without looking at the context of the passage. He said to take some for
ailing purposes, not for secular, personal enjoyment.

Since facts are supposed to be supported in the mouths of two or more
witnesses, (John 8:17,18) I would like to give you two bible verses to keep
in your heart for this issue.

1. Proverbs 20:1 WINE is a MOCKER, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is
deceived thereby is not wise.

2. Proverbs 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth
his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

The most picturesque description of wine and its' attributes is found in
Proverbs 23:29-35.

I hope this helped answer your question.

God bless,

Paul Grady
