GOD’S PLAN TO HEAL THE SNAKE BITTEN ISRAELITES

 

 

Text:  Numbers 21:4-9

 

INTRODUCTION:  The Israelites are a case history in the character of rebellion.

 

I.                     THE SIN OF THE PEOPLE  (Numbers 21:4-5)

 

A.            They Were Much Discouraged  (21:4)

 

1.     In the way

                              NOTE: Discourage – to deprive of courage, hope, or confidence

a.       Miriam had died  (Numbers 20:1)

b.       The people had rebelled  (Numbers 20:2-3)

c.       Moses and Aaron had sinned  (Numbers 20:11-12)        

d.       Edom had refused passage  (Numbers 20:14,17-18)

e.       Aaron had died  (Numbers 20:24,19)

f.         The people had fought Arad  (Numbers 21:1-3)

                   2.     Purpose of the way

a.       To prove the Israelites  (Deuteronomy 8:2-3)

b.       To prove God  (Psalms 37:5,23,34)

                                    Your way – God’s way

                                    1. Commit Your way to God (v.5)

                                    2. Delight in God’s way (v.23)

                                    3. Keep God’s way (v.34)

 

B.            They Spake Against God  (21:5a)

1.            Against God’s man  (Exodus 16:2,8)

2.            Against God Himself  (Psalms 78:19,41,56)

3.            Ten times plus  (Numbers 14:21-23)

 

C.            They Spake Against Moses  (21:5a)

1.            Miriam and Aaron  (Numbers 12:1, 6-9)

2.            Korah and his followers  (Numbers 16:1-3, 31-35)

3.            The whole congregation  (Numbers 16:41,46)

4.            God’s men protected  (2Samuel 1:14-16; Psalm 105:15; 1Timothy 5:19)

           

D.            They Complained About God’s Provisions  (21:5b) (Exodus 16:14-15, 31)

1.          Water  (Exodus 15:23-24; 17:1-3; Numbers 20:1-4)

2.          Meat  (Exodus 16:1-3; Numbers 11:4-6)

3.          God’s true provision  (Deuteronomy 29:2-5; Joshua 5:11-12)

4.          Godly contentment  (1Timothy 6:6-8; Hebrews 13:5)

 

II.                   THE JUDGMENT OF GOD  (Numbers 21:6)

 

A.            The Lord Sent Fiery Serpents Among the People  (Jeremiah 8:17; Amos 9:1-3)

 

            B.     The Serpents Bit the People

 

            C.     Much People of Israel Died – God’s Judgment

1.For the unsaved  (John 3:18,36; 1Thessalonians 5:9)

2.For the saved  (Hebrews 12:3-11)

 

III.                  THE REPENTANCE OF THE PEOPLE  (Numbers 21:7)

 

“WE HAVE SINNED”

 

A.            They Made a Complete Confession

1.Confession – admitting sin  (1John 1:9)

2.Acknowledgement – naming sin  (Psalms 32:5; 51:3)

3.Repentance – leaving sin  (Matthew 3;7,8; 2Corinthians 7:9-11)

4.Cleansing – sin forgiven  (1John 1:7)

 

B.            They Requested Moses to Pray For Them

         (1Samuel 12:18-22)

 

C.            Moses Prayed For the People

   Intercession: making request in behalf of another

1.Moses  (Exodus 32:30-32)

2.Paul  (Romans 9:1-3; 10:1)

3.New Testament Christians  (1Timothy 2:1)

 

IV.                GOD’S PLAN TO HEAL THE PEOPLE  (Numbers 21:8-9; John 3:14-18)

 

NOTE: The Remedy  (John 3:1-18; Acts 4:12; Ephesians 2:8)

 

A.      A Divine Remedy   (“For God”)  “The Lord said”

1.Human redemption absolutely impossible  (Psalms 49:7-9,15)

2.Divine redemption absolutely necessary  (1Peter 1:18-21)

 

B.            A Simple Remedy  (“his only begotten Son”)  “a fiery serpent, upon a pole”

1.God’s provision – In Christ  (John 12:32)

2.Man’s acceptance – By faith  (Romans 10:8-14, 17)

 

C.            An Instantaneous Remedy  (“have”)  “when he looketh”  “Look and Live”

1.At the time of belief  (Acts 16:30-32)

2.Sealed with the Spirit  (Ephesians 1:13,14)

 

D.            An Effectual Remedy  (“everlasting life”)  “he….shall live”

1.Everlasting life  (John 5:24)

2.Abundant life  (John 10:10)

 

E.            An Individual Remedy  (“whosoever”)  “everyone that is bitten’

1.Universal provision (1Timothy 2:3-6)

2.Individual acceptance (1Timothy 4:10; Romans 10:13)

 

F.            The Only Remedy  (“in Him”)  “when he beheld the serpent of brass”

1.In Christ only (John 14:6; Acts 4:12)

2.Without works (Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:8,9)

 

G.           A Free Remedy  (“he gave”)  “when he beheld”

1.    The gift of God (Romans 6:23)

                     2.    Paid for by Christ (2Corinthians 8:9)
