The Prating Fool

 

Text:  Proverbs 10:8,10; 3John 10

 

INTRODUCTION: Prate: to talk much and foolishly; chatter; to make idle talk  

  •             Many words – the fool’s trademark  Ecclesiastes 5:3; 10:12-14

  •             Many words – the place of sin  Proverbs 10:19

  •             Few words – the mark of wisdom  Proverbs 17:27; 21:23; James 1:19; 1Samuel 3:19

 

I.                    PRATING WORDS ARE DISOBEDIENT WORDS  Proverbs 10:8

 

A.      Interpretation

 

B.       Examples

 

1.   The Sluggard   Proverbs 26:13-16

2.   The Rebellious   1Samuel 15:13-23

 

            C.   Application   1Timothy 5:13

 

II.                 PRATING WORDS ARE DECEITFUL WORDS  Proverbs 10:10

 

A.      Interpretation – Proverbs 6:13  winking: a sign of secret agreement, secret flirtation or lying

 

B.       Examples

 

1.    Causing Division  Romans 16:17-18

2.    Causing Heresy  Titus 1:10-11; 2Timothy 2:16-17

 

C.      Application – Ephesians 4:25; Colossians 3:9-10

 

III.               PRATING WORDS ARE DESTRUCTIVE WORDS  3John 9-10

 

A.      Interpretation

 

B.       Example – Proverbs 12:6,18; 25:18; James 3:5-9

 

C.      Application – Ephesians 4:31; 1Peter 2:1

 

CONCLUSION:  Matthew 12:36 – To Give Account for Every Idle Word; may God help us to keep a watch on our tongue
