Redigging The Wells

Genesis 26:17-22

INTRODUCTION:  Isaac pitches his tent in the valley of Gerar and finds that he needs a source of water. Isaac remembers that during Abraham's day there were some wells that had provided his needs and decides to dig again those wells. Isaac found that the wells that had provided water for his Father still provided for him. As Christians, there are some things that God used in the generations before us and it's high time we dig afresh some of these wells and allow God to provide 'a well of springing water'.

  1. The Wells Were Originally Dug in Earlier Years (v. 18) (Psalm 11:3; Proverbs 22:28; Jeremiah 6:16)
  2. The Wells Had Been Stopped Up By the Philistines (v. 18) (Jeremiah 2:13; Matthew 23:13)
  3. Isaac Began By Redigging the Same Wells (v. 18)
    1. Holiness (2 Corinthians 6:17; Titus 2:14)
    2. Prayer (Acts 12:5)
    3. Family (Acts 16:30-33)

    5. Church (1 Timothy 3:15)
    6. Witness (Acts 4:31; 11:19-21)
    7. Doctrine (Jude 3)

  4. Isaac Called the Wells By Their Original Names (v. 18)

  5. In the Valley They Dug a Well of Springing Water (v. 19) (Job 35:10; Psalm 77:1-6; Acts 16:25)

  6. There Was Contention With Others Over the Digging of the Wells (v. 20-21) (Nehemiah 4:1-18; Ephesians 6:10-13; 2 Timothy 3:12)

  7. Because of Their Persistence God Made Room For Them to Be Fruitful (v. 22) (Galatians 6:9; 1 Corinthians 15:58)
