Scripture Passage:
1 Chronicles 23:1-32

As he continued to prepare for Solomon’s reign after his death, David organized the Levites for more efficient service in a stationary temple in Jerusalem.

What Does It Say?

  1. At the time of this chapter, David was old and full of ________.
  2. David organized the sons of Levi by dividing them into ____________.
  3. Eliezer, the son of Moses, had only one son named ______________.  But his sons were very _______.
  4. David changed the numbering of the Levites from those ________ years old and upward to those _________ years old and upward.
  5. The Levites were to stand every morning to _________ and _________ the LORD, and likewise at even.

What Does It Mean?

  1. Read verses 3-5.  What four jobs were the Levites set aside to do?  What job required the most workers?
  2. Read verse 5.  Compare Amos 6:5 – “That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David.”  What do these verses teach us about the life of David?  Do we have other evidences of his interest in music?
  3. Verse 22 says of one of the sons of Mahli, “And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.”  What does this verse mean?  Compare this with Deuteronomy 25:5-6.

What Does It Mean to Me?

  1. Aaron and his sons were separated to the holy office “to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever” (v.13).  How can we spiritually fulfill these three acts of worship today?  In what ways do we need to be separated in order to do these things?  [NOTE: to understand the picture given by the offering of incense, you might want to read Psalm 141:2; Revelation 8:3-4).
  2. The Levites were told that “their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD” (v.28).  How does this apply to our service and to what Jesus said in Matthew 23:11 – “But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant?”
