Sketches of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers
by J. J. Burnett
- Original copyright 1919; Reprinted with Index 1985; Copyright 1985 by The Overmountain Press, Johnson City, Tennessee
- 576 pages with short biographies of over 200 early Tennessee Baptist preachers
- Written by James Jehu Burnett (1854-1937); a graduate of Carson-Newman College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; worked for a time as a correspondent for the East Tennessee Baptist and the Baptist and Reflector; lived in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
- Excellent source of information by one who knew a number of the men he wrote about and who was able to interview those who knew many others. Possibly the most valuable part of the book is the Name Index. Many names are mentioned throughout the book.
- NOTE: The book still needs a church index. Partial histories of many early churches could be compiled from this index.
- The Sketches can be read on-line at the Knox County Historical Page. (http://www.knoxcotn.org/tnbaptists/index.html)
