The Comforter, Which Is the Holy Ghost (John 14:26)

Introductory Thoughts

The Bible never directly addresses the Lord Jesus as “the Comforter,” yet the Lord alluded to this title. The Lord told His followers that the coming of the Holy Ghost would be God’s means of sending them “another Comforter” (John 14:16). Evidently, the Lord Jesus served as the Comforter and the Holy Ghost would function as another Comforter. During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus worked in the lives of those who followed Him. He was their Comforter. When He went to the Father, the Father sent “another Comforter” and He is the Holy Ghost. Each person who is born again by the grace of God has the Holy Ghost dwelling within (Romans 8:9). When troubles come, and they will, the believer has within himself a person of the Godhead that specializes in comforting those afflicted.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): The Holy Ghost is God (1 John 5:7; Acts 5:3-4). He lives inside every single believer (John 14:17). Since God has the power to make everything (Job 33:4; Psalm 33:6-9), He has the power to comfort you in anything (Isaiah 51:12-13).
  • (For everyone): If comfort is strength that you can carry with you, how does the Holy Ghost perfectly fit the description of the Comforter? How is He strength that can be carried with you?
  • How can the comfort of the Holy Ghost be a wonderful evidence of salvation? Where does a lost person get his comfort? How is comfort different in the life of a saved person?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Thank God for sending the Holy Ghost to be your Comforter.
  • Ask God to help you submit to the comfort of the Spirit.
