God Hates Witchcraft (Exodus 22:18)

Introductory Thoughts

With each passing year, witchcraft has grown more acceptable in the eyes of man, yet God has not wavered concerning His thoughts on these matters. In the Old Testament, being a witch (Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 20:27) and seeking after a witch (Leviticus 20:6-7) were both crimes worthy of death. Even in the age where grace is much more evident, God calls witchcraft a work of the flesh and declares plainly that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:20-21; Revelation 22:15). Not only should believers avoid the practice of such wickedness, they should also refuse to “have pleasure in them that do them” (Romans 1:32) regardless of how innocently they are packaged to make them look harmless.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): Read Psalm 7:11b and Proverbs 17:11. God likens witchcraft to rebellion (1 Samuel 15:23). He will judge it (Micah 5:12, 15). During Jonah's time, Nineveh repented of her wicked ways (Jonah 3:8-10) but later turned back to them and was destroyed (Nahum 3:4, 7).
  • (For everyone): Name some ways in which witchcraft has gained access into the homes of otherwise godly people. Has witchcraft found a way into your home as well?
  • What steps should be taken to ensure that witchcraft does not become acceptable to your family?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Ask God for the courage to do what is right.
  • Ask the Lord to convict you of any witchcraft in your home.
