They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine (2 Timothy 4:3)

Introductory Thoughts

The apostle Paul warned of a time when people would no longer endure sound doctrine. Because of their lusts, they would actively seek after teachers who turned them unto fables. In fact, much of this is accomplished by people using the truth as a source for teaching things contrary to the very truth they supposedly uphold. Far too frequently people have been turned away from the truth in the name of truth. These Bible teachers elevate themselves as the authority while creating fables generally based upon certain verses of scripture. The tragedy may begin subtly, but eventually, many people seek after these teachers rather than scripture. This is why Paul admonished Timothy to “Preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2) to delay the onset of this spiritually desolate period.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): People do not like Gods word because it tells them they need to be saved and do what God wants. Consider some of the different reactions from those who did not want to hear Gods word: Psalm 50:17; Jeremiah 5:31; Jeremiah 36:21-25; Acts 7:54-57.
  • (For everyone): If both sound doctrine and fables originate from the same source, how can we know the difference between the two? What can you do to ensure that you are not led away from the truth?
  • Paul warned that people would seek teachers rather than scripture. Is this happening today? Has it happened to you? Where is your allegiance? Who is your authority?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Ask the Lord to help you to endure sound doctrine.
  • Ask the Lord to help you to seek scripture over teachers.
