Learn Not the Way of the Heathen (Jeremiah 10:1-2)

Introductory Thoughts

The people of God must be cautious not to misuse any heavenly signs. What exactly are these“signs”? According to Genesis 1:14, the sun and moon are given “for signs.” In Daniel 6:27, the Lord is said to work “signs and wonders in heaven and in earth.” Regardless of whether the Bible is speaking of the sun, moon, and stars, or special events that occur in the heavens, man must be careful how he uses these “signs.” For this and other reasons, believers should always reject astrology (i.e., horoscopes) and any other unscriptural use of the signs in the heavens. Let the heathen do as they will, but the saints of God must not be partakers with them.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): God is above His creation and the creation worships Him (Psalm 8:1, 3-4; Psalm 19:1; Psalm 148:3). Interestingly, the heathen gets things backwards by worshiping the creation rather than the God of all creation (Deuteronomy 4:14, 19; Deuteronomy 12:29-30; Deuteronomy 17:2-3, 5; Zephaniah 1:2, 5a). God used a star to guide the wise men, but whom did they worship (Matthew 2:2, 9-11)?
  • (For everyone): Read Isaiah 47:13. How does this passage demonstrate Gods frustration with those who put their confidence in astrologers? How does receiving counsel from such people actually work to make an individual weary?
  • Why should believers reject horoscopes? Do these things associate you with the heathen or with God?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Ask the Lord to protect you from any form of divination.
  • Ask God to help you to choose to obey Him in every aspect of life.
