There Is No Rest (Psalm 38:1-11)

Introductory Thoughts

Sin cripples a man in every way. It hides God’s face (Isaiah 59:2) and withholds good things from man that he would otherwise have opportunity to enjoy (Jeremiah 5:25). Instead of peace, joy, and blessings, sin brings unrest, frustration, and heartaches. Perhaps no passage better depicts this than the 38th psalm. According to that psalm, sin robbed David’s bones of rest (Psalm 38:3). Sin troubled him and caused him to “go mourning all the day long” (Psalm 38:6). It brought disquietness to David’s heart which caused him to roar (Psalm 38:8). It caused his heart to pant and his strength to fail (Psalm 38:10). Although some things vary, sin always works to rob men of the good things God has for them to enjoy.

Devotional Thoughts

  • (For children): God punished His people for their continued disobedience and it was not pleasant (Ezekiel 39:23; Deuteronomy 28:63-67). Learn a lesson from Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived (Proverbs 13:15; Ecclesiastes 2:26).
  • (For everyone): The pleasures of sin are for a season (Hebrews 11:25). Read Isaiah 48:22 and Isaiah 57:21. What happens after the season of enjoyment passes?
  • Name some people in scripture who were robbed of good things because of their sins. What are some things that were lost? What can you learn from this truth?

Prayer Thoughts

  • Ask God to show you the consequences of sin.
  • Confess your sins to God. He alone can restore what is lost.
