He Maketh No Mistake

Scripture Passage:
Romans 8:28

INTRODUCTION: A reassurance of God’s providential working in the life of the believer. Providence: God’s continual care over that which He had created.

  1. OUR CONFIDENCE IN HIS PROVIDENCE
    1. Our Knowledge of Salvation (2 Timothy 1:12)
    2. Our Knowledge of His Providence (Romans 8:28 – “we know”)
    3. The Example of Abraham (Romans 4:18-21)
  2. THE COMPLETENESS OF HIS PROVIDENCE
    1. The Scope of God’s Working (Romans 8:28 – “all things”)
    2. Things Both Large and Small (Zechariah 4:10)
    3. Things Both Good and Evil (James 1:2-4)
    4. The Example of Esther (Esther 4:14); the story of Esther is a story of all things working together for good
  3. THE COMPLEXITY OF HIS PROVIDENCE
    1. The Working of God’s Providence (Romans 8:28 – “work together”)
    2. Like the Gears in a Watch: not all going in the same direction, but all pushing the hands of the watch in the same direction
    3. Synergy – the dynamics by which the sum of the total is greater than the sum of the parts; first used in pharmacology in reference to the greater effect of certain combinations of medicine.
    4. The Example of Joseph (Genesis 50:20; Psalm 105:17-19)
  4.  THE CONDITION OF HIS PROVIDENCE
    1. Not the Same Working for All (Romans 8:28)
      1. For those who love God
      2. For those who are called according to His purpose
    2. The Example of Paul (Philippians 1:12-14; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10)
  5. THE CONCLUSION OF HIS CONFIDENCE
    1. The Ultimate Goal of God’s Providence (Romans 8:29)
      1. To conform us to the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18)
      2. To make Christ the firstborn among many brethren
    2.  The Example of Job (Job 1:20-22; Job 42:12-13)

CONCLUSION: My mother caring for Grandmother Francis and Aunt Nancy. Her journal of the trial. The poem from grandmother’s book:  “He Maketh No Mistake.”

He Maketh No Mistake
My Father’s way may twist and turn,
My heart may throb and ache,
But in my soul I’m glad I know
He maketh no mistake.
My cherished plans may go astray,
My hopes may fade away,
But still I’ll trust my Lord to lead
For He doth know the way.
Tho’ night be dark and it may seem
That day will never break;
I’ll put my faith, my all in him,
He maketh no mistake.
There’s so much now I cannot see
My eyesight’s far too dim;
But come what may, I’ll simply trust
And leave it all to Him.
For by and by the mist will lift
And plain it all He’ll make,
Through all the way, tho’ dark to me,
He made not one mistake.
