Turn on the Spigot

Although it is not so prominent today, the United States used to have vocabulary words distinctive to the different parts of the country. Years ago, what was called a faucet in the North was called a spigot in the South. I was reminded of the spigot (a word commonly used by my grandparents) last night as I reviewed some memory verses. The verse in question was 1 Timothy 2:1, wich states, "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men."

Anyway, I caught myself misquoting the list of words relating to prayer. I was putting 'prayers' at the first of the list, but when I looked at my memory verse card, I found that the list began with 'supplications.' This led me to one of my techniques for memorizing lists in the Bible: I notice the pattern of the first letters of each of the words in the list. Sometimes these patterns have something about them that makes them easy to memorize. But imagine my surprise when I saw this: Supplications, Prayers, Intercessions, and Giving Of Thanks; or, with just the acronym: SPIGOT.

That reminded me of my parents' and grandparents' homes which were furnished with an outside spigot (faucet to many of you). I remember being told to take a watering can to the spigot and fill it up so that the flowers or other plants could be watered. As such, the spigot was a source of refreshment and blessing. Do you need a refreshing from the Lord? Do you need to draw from His strength? Then go turn on the spigot and put your bucket underneath. Send Him your Supplications, Prayers, Intercessions, and Giving Of Thanks and He will send you His blessings.
